FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Great Lakes Observing System awarded $1.4 Million New funds help GLOS address critical Information needs in the Great Lakes ANN ARBOR, Mich., September 15, 2011 – The Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), working to coordinate and enhance the network of observations and data access in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River system, will receive $1.4 Million in funding from the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). The 2011-2012 IOOS award is the largest amount GLOS has received from the national program to date. "Businesses, government agencies, and the general public have to be able to get pertinent data to make decisions about management and use of the Great Lakes. Data providers often don't know what data managers need. GLOS was created to bridge those two worlds, to bring the end-users requirements into the design of Great Lakes data collection and display efforts. We consider this award recognition of the importance of that idea," said Bill Werick, Chairman of the GLOS Board of Directors. “This award helps the Great Lakes Observing System meet needs of U.S. citizens and coordinate efforts with Canada. The money goes to activities such as maintaining observing assets, monitoring drinking water quality, and informing mariners when it is safe to head out on the water. It is about addressing critical issues to improve safety, economy, and environment,” said Zdenka Willis, Director of the NOAA-led U.S. IOOS Program. GLOS is dedicated to developing a fully integrated, bi-national observing system that provides products and services to decision-makers, resource managers and other data users. In partnership with federal, state and local government agencies, research institutions, industries, private corporations, bi-national organizations, and not for profit organizations, GLOS connects data users with data providers in ways that are supportive of policy and decision-making.
