FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 30, 2011 Vanessa Villarreal 312-846-5331 Vanessa.Villarreal at usace.army.mil U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awards ecosystem restoration contract for NW Indiana On Sept. 27, 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District awarded a base construction contract for $867,775 to ENCAP, Inc., for ecosystem restoration on the 198-acre Calumet Prairie Ivanhoe South project in northwest Indiana. The project was authorized under the Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration (GLFER) authority, Section 506, WRDA 2000 and was entirely funded through U.S. EPA's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). This is the 5th GLRI-funded GLFER project awarded by the Corps' Chicago District for construction this year. In addition, this project will assist in delisting the Indiana Harbor Canal Grand Calumet River Area of Concern. Calumet Prairie and Ivanhoe South are part of a globally, nationally and regionally significant coastal ecosystem containing high quality remnant natural communities, providing habitat for several endangered, threatened, and rare species, and serving as an important stopover site for migratory birds. The project will restore 164 acres of wet sand prairie and 34 acres of ridge and swale habitat comprised of sand savanna and marsh communities. This will happen by clearing woodlands (made up of non-native and opportunistic trees and shrubs), removing invasive species, recovering native seed banks, planting native species, and prescribed burns. Construction activities will start in the fall by conducting a prescribed burn and work will continue through the winter with tree clearing. ENCAP, Inc. is certified as a small business. ### -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
