Increased Data Exchange Means Better Great Lakes Adaptive Management

Photo by Lisa BorreAlthough goals for the Great Lakes have been set collaboratively for at least the last century, our ability to manage human uses of this important ecosystem have recently improved, given advances in data management and information systems that make it easier to develop and access common data sets. This is particularly true of the foundational physical data, such as the components of the net basin supply of water, e.g., precipitation, run-off, evaporation, and connecting channel flows. Monitoring changes in these data sets over time will help regional resource managers determine what, if any, impact human activities such as withdrawals for municipal or industrial purposes or irrigation are having on the larger ecosystem. These foundational data sets are also useful baselines for those managers implementing adaptive management in face of future climate uncertainties. <http://glos.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=69aa6ac71fb3609edc247852f&id=e44c5b876a&e=f2a3e78048> > Learn more

Integrated Ocean Observing System Summit

The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Summit was held in November 2012, in Herndon, VA, ten years after a 2002 workshop that kicked off IOOS. The summit was attended by over 200 scientists, technical operators, managers, outreach experts and users. Attendees helped to identify a path forward to address the observing system’s role in meeting the economic, security and environmental needs of our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes.

The key outcome of the summit was a declaration that can be found here <http://glos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69aa6ac71fb3609edc247852f&id=0d672c03b7&e=f2a3e78048> . The declaration identifies key accomplishments thus far, and planned focus areas over the next ten years. Key future focus areas include climate change adaptation, extreme event forecasting and response, food and water security, and ecosystem goods and services.

More information about the summit can be found on the IOOS webpage here <http://glos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69aa6ac71fb3609edc247852f&id=b7298876d7&e=f2a3e78048> .

Do you work on Lake Michigan Issues?

If so, you are invited to join the Lake Michigan Ecosystem Modeling and Forecasting Working Group. The Working Group provides an opportunity for managers, modelers, and users of model outputs to work collaboratively, and help improve decision-making as well as the usefulness and functionality of Lake Michigan models. Working Group activities bring together existing management priorities in the region and work to address identified needs.

Current focus areas for the Working Group are:

*	Beach Closings
*	Fish Stock Assessment
*	Cladophera/Nutrient Management

For more information on the Working Group, including links to the group's latest meeting report and Operational Principles please click <http://glos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69aa6ac71fb3609edc247852f&id=42d9a69b43&e=f2a3e78048> here <http://glos.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=69aa6ac71fb3609edc247852f&id=85dd2856f5&e=f2a3e78048> .

If you are interested in joining the Working Group, please contact the group’s Coordinator, Marvourneen Dolor, at mdolor at glos.us.
