GREAT LAKES AND ST. LAWRENCE CITIES INITIATIVE TOPS THE CENTURY MARK

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative reached a milestone today as it welcomed its 100th and 101st members to the organization!  In just under 10 years, it has grown from fewer than 20 cities to its current size, and now represents over 16 million Canadian and U.S. citizens.

Cities Initiative Chair Tom Barrett, Mayor of Milwaukee, set a goal in June 2012 to reach 100 members by June 2013.  Today, over two months ahead of schedule, the Cities Initiative is proud to announce to our members, partners, friends and supporters that we total 101 members!

By participation in the Cities Initiative and taking countless actions locally, 101 municipalities across eight states, two provinces and two countries demonstrate the importance of cities in the protection, restoration and enhancement of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.  The membership of local governments includes 48 in Ontario, 31 in the United States, and 22 in Quebec.

The Cities Initiative will celebrate this achievement and its Tenth Anniversary at its next Annual Meeting and Conference, June 19-21, 2013, in Marquette, Michigan.  All are encouraged to attend.
