dialogue and technology transfer throughout the region. This series
includes topics such as: current research on Phragmites control,
management techniques and case studies, monitoring and assessment
protocols, mapping and tracking and regional management initiatives. We

Upcoming Webinars:

1. April 5, 2013 2pm Eastern
Can We Manage Without Herbicide? Lessons learned from the Ontario
experience

Janice Gilbert, Ph.D Wetland Ecologist, Ontario, Canada

Effective management of Phragmites, particularly in dense stands, is
likely to require multiple treatments using a combination of methods over
a period of years. Herbicides are often recommended as the primary
treatment method, followed by prescribed burns, mechanical treatment,
flooding and follow-up treatment with herbicide. But what do you do when
herbicides are not available? Use of overwater herbicides containing
surfactants is illegal in Ontario. Janice Gilbert, Ph.D. and chair of the
Ontario Phragmites Working Group will provide an overview on the status of
chemical application in Ontario, discuss non-chemical control methods and
provide information on the province-wide strategy to manage this invasive
species.

Join us to learn more about methods for managing Phragmites without
herbicide.

Past Webinars:

1. February 6, 2013 10am-12pm Eastern

Multiscale Phragmites Mapping and its Applications

Brian Huberty, Regional Coordinator for the National Wetland Inventory
(NWI) program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Laura Bourgeau-Chavez, Research Scientist, Michigan Tech Research
Institute
Kurt Kowalski, Research Ecologist, US Geological Survey-Great Lakes
Science Center
Mark Renz , Assistant Professor, Agronomy Department, University of
Wisconsin-Madison

Whether Phragmites is wide-spread or rare in an area, it is of critical
importance to track its location and changes through time to inform
management activities. During this webinar, Brian Huberty (U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service) will provide an overview of why mapping Phragmites is
important, the value of different scales of analysis or focus and the
types of data people should think about. Laura Bourgeau-Chavez (Michigan
Tech Research Institute) will provide an overview of a recently completed
project <http://www.mtri.org/phragmites.html> which mapped Phragmites
along the coasts of the Great Lakes. Kurt Kowalski (USGS-Great Lakes
Science Center) will present on the
<http://cida.usgs.gov/glri/phragmites/> Phragmites Vulnerability
Decision-Support Tool: how it was created and how it can help land
managers. Mark Renz (University of Wisconsin-Madison) will present on the
Midwest Invasive Plant Network ( <http://mipn.org/index.html> MIPN) and on
