INLAND SEAS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION - POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT (Re-Posting) EDUCATION DIRECTOR GENERAL The mission of the Inland Seas Education Association is to foster science learning and create a new stewardship for the Great Lakes though experiential education. Inland Seas Education Association operates two schooners and a sloop as science and heritage classrooms on the Great Lakes. ISEA's operations are based at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay, Michigan. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The Education Director develops, implements and oversees all of the shipboard and land-based education programs of the association. 1. Develop, with ISEA staff and volunteer instructors, shipboard, shore side and classroom curriculum for various client groups including school classes, teachers, businesses, government agencies and the general public. 2. Prepare instructional materials including printed and electronic (WWW) formats. 3. Supervise on-board instruction as needed. Lead educational programs aboard during 2 - 5 day duration programs. 4. Develop Great Lakes exhibits and public curriculum at the Inland Seas Education Center. 5. Coordinate joint programs with various units of government, tribes, educational institutions and private organizations. 6. Develop and implement marketing strategies for ISEA programs, including establishing relationships with client organizations, government agencies, and organizations in port cities. 7. Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate volunteer instructors. 8. Prepare reports, proposals and news releases. 9. Make presentations at conferences and public meetings. 10. Monitor the equipment and supplies needed for ISEA's educational programs, including inventory, acquisition, maintenance and repair. 11. Supervise Volunteer & Education Coordinator and student interns QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Advanced degree (MS, MA) in science, education or environment-related field. 2. Five years experience in curriculum development and teaching youth and adults with experiential education emphasis. 3. Strong knowledge of Great Lakes related science and environmental issues. 4. Excellent written, verbal and computer communication skills. 5. Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to work effectively with students, professional staff and volunteers. 6. Experience aboard education, research or sail-training vessels. 7. Able to work in occasionally adverse, outdoor conditions (rain, cold, rough seas) aboard ships. 8. Able to lift sampling equipment (40 pounds); throw and haul on lines as needed aboard sailing vessels. 9. Must pass DOT pre-employment drug test and take part in ISEA's ongoing drug testing program. 10. Possess or obtain current CPR and First Aid certificates. 11. Able to travel away from office site for 1 to 10 days. Some weekend and evening hours required. COMPENSATION: To be negotiated. Health and dental insurance included. 403-B retirement plan.
