A belated addition to this conversation (vacation!): E2 or P2 Finance are wonderful tools for getting a full picture of all the relevant costs, which is vital to get a fair comparison of alternatives to your current practices. A very useful complement is PROJECT, a tool that EPA uses for assessing the net present value of proposed projects (for Supplemental Environmental Projects. It's a program attorneys use when negotiating settlements. (It's very interesting in that context, because a great project with quick payback might be bad for your negotiating position, if EPA wants you to feel you are being punished...short paybacks may even be prevented from being considered as SEP options, and in general, the better the payback, the less off your penalty you will get, unless there are other considerations to outweigh that, such as that it has great demonstration value. But that's a topic for another discussion). The reason I'm sending you this link to PROJECT - http://www.epa.gov/compliance/civil/econmodels/index.html - is because once you have used E2 or P2 Finance to get the full costs of both your current practice and the alternatives, you can compare them by whipping up an NPV for each by using PROJECT. I say whip up because in contrast to both E2 Finance or P2 Finance and most other software tools you will ever use, PROJECT is extremely user friendly - quick to learn and use. It does just about every financial calculation for EE investments that you need. And its free. I have been hosting a download of it from my website for several years. http://cleanerproduction.com/misc/Finance.htm There is a more simple version of it in Excel format, P2Finance, also available. If you use it and it's useful please let me know, I am trying to collect user feedback. Its the best financial analysis tool for capital investments that no one has ever heard of. For that, you'll need to know the project cost, which is highly site specific. Although it is called "Texas Sized Energy Savings" it can be used anywhere. http://TexasIOF.ces.utexas.edu/ under "What's New" Kathey Kathey A.
