Robert, Another option might be to make ties out of alternative materials that do not require preservatives. There are commercially viable alternatives that utilize recycled plastics, recycled tires and wood/plastic mixtures. Moving forward, the viability of creosote or other chemical preservative use as a "necessity" may be very limited. http://www.epa.gov/owow/oceans/debris/pdf/creosote_cleanup_puget.pdf http://www.tietek.com/ http://www.tietek.com/product.php http://www.tietek.com/classone_railroad.php http://apta.com/resources/hottopics/Documents/Sullivan_APTA.pdf http://www.plasticpilings.com/tiesx.html#a http://www.rti-railroad-tie.com/ http://www.americanrecycler.com/10ties.html http://hansentie.com/2009/03/green-railroad-tie-wins-environmental-accolades/ http://www.envirovaluation.org/index.php/2009/01/25/public-transportation-stands-at-center-o "The MTA should expand the procurement of sustainable railroad ties at all rail agencies." http://news.rutgers.edu/focus/issue.2009-02-02.4357742289/article.2009-02-02.6065738797 Ron Smith Ohio EPA, Office of Compliance Assistance & Pollution Prevention 614-644-2813 614-644-2807 fax ron.smith at epa.state.oh.us http://www.epa.state.oh.us/ocapp/ocapp.html "We exist temporarily by what we take, we exist forever by what we give." -Will Rogers, Jr. >>> "Henry, Robert" <RHenry at idem.IN.gov> 10/21/2009 10:44 AM >>> I am working with a manufacturer of railroad ties. They currently use creosote distilled from coal tar in a pressure treatment system. Are there any environmentally friendly replacements for creosote? Can anyone point me towards some studies showing replacements that work as well as creosote? I have spent a few days searching and have not found anything note worthy. I did notice a discussion on CR4 about cedar oil, but there were not any valid references provided.
