Restoring forgotten Buffalo lighthouse will create ‘heritage bookends’

Think of the historic Buffalo, N.Y., waterfront, and your mind is likely to picture the Buffalo Lighthouse. But there is another lighthouse on Buffalo’s waterfront, unknown to most.
Beaver Island Lighthouse a gateway to the north through Straits of Mackinac
In the 1800's, ships often passed just south of Beaver Island as they made their way to or from the Straits of Mackinac to the north. To aid this navigation, the current Beaver Island lighthouse was built in 1851.
Dual-towered Michigan Island Lightstation lived two lives during time in operation

Michigan Island is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Lake Superior. There are actually two towers at the lightstation on this island. According to historical documents, the first light was intended to be built on nearby Long Island.
3 Great Lakes lighthouses up for auction
The federal government is taking bids on the Skillagalee Island lighthouse off Emmet County, the Gravelly Shoal light in Saginaw Bay, and the Spectacle Reef light in northern Lake Huron as part of a continued effort to offload obsolete properties.
